The New Canaan Sculpture Trail was created by the New Canaan Land Trust, in partnership with the Carriage Barn Arts Center, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Earth Day. By joining art and nature, this inaugural outdoor art exhibition promises to uniquely connect residents and visitors to our natural surroundings. The exhibition features eight juried sculptural installations at six New Canaan Land Trust preserves, the front lawn of the New Canaan Town Hall, and the courtyard of the Carriage Barn Arts Center. The Sculpture Trail is open to the public from April 1 through July 31, 2020.
Over the years, the New Canaan Garden Club has asked members to volunteer and give of their time and creative talents to arrange flowers for the main rooms at Waveny Care Center in New Canaan for chosen months. This year the month of January was selected and each week, depending on how many volunteers signed up, they created flower arrangements to suit the setting of the room and make sure the flowers stay fresh-looking for the week they volunteer for.
Join the New Canaan Pollinator Pathway partners for an evening with Doug Tallamy, professor of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Delaware and author of several books on the benefits of native plant gardening.
Since 1960, the Garden Club has convened each December to make large holiday wreaths for our downtown area and buildings. In 1976, we joined forces with the New Canaan Beautification League. As a result of this collaboration, we have expanded our wreath-making efforts, and our beautiful wreaths now adorn the entrances to Town Hall, the Police Department, the Library, the Train Station, and the Nature Center.
The Holiday Arrangements for Meals on Wheels and the New Canaan Inn developed three years ago as a natural extension of the annual Christmas Wreath Making workshop. Using the small greens pieces left from the large wreaths made for public Town Buildings, we create miniature arrangements for Meals on Wheels trays and centerpieces for dining tables at the New Canaan Inn. Simple floral arrangements made with greens combined with flowers bring holiday cheer early in the season to many senior and homebound citizens.
The November meeting of the New Canaan Garden Club was a joint meeting with the Darien Garden Club. Members of both clubs gathered at Waveny House and were thoroughly entertained and educated by renown floral designer Ariella Chezar, author of Seasonal Flower Arranging and The Flower Workshop.
Dear NCGC Members and Friends:
We need to continue raising funds for our Invasive Weed Eradication Project in Irwin Park. This project began this past summer (2019) with the addition of environmentally friendly goats “hired” to eat a large area overrun with invasives. This is a multi-year, multi-pronged project and WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT.
A wealth of CONGRATULATIONS to NCGC member and former president Jane Gamber for her multiple wins at the Newport Flower Show in June! Jane’s fabulous succulent birdbath was awarded the Newport in Bloom Award (most exceptional entry in the Outdoor Container classes) and the National Garden Club Award in Horticulture (finest in the horticulture division). We are so proud of Jane and her impressive talents!
New Canaan Garden Club is one of ten New Canaan organizations that have pledged to become part of the Pollinator Pathway, a pesticide-free corridor of public and private properties that provide native pollinator-friendly plant habitats and food sources for bees, butterflies, hummingbirds and other pollinating insects and wildlife.
